The Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab, also known as the Red Reef Hermit Crab or Red Legged Hermit Crab, is a beloved marine and reef aquarium cleaner utilized extensively by marine aquarium hobbyists of all skill levels for its gregarious scavenging abilities. The Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab is very hardy, requires minimal care in a well-established system, and has a voracious appetite for detritus and algae.
In fact, the Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab is particularly fond of nuisance algae of the filamentous, hair, and slime varieties, as well as cyanobacteria. Unlike many other hermit crabs, the Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab tends to be very peaceful towards its tankmates. However, if there is insufficient algae to eat, a hungry Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab may take advantage of slow-moving or vulnerable tankmates so be sure there’s plenty to eat or supplement the diet of the Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab with dried seaweed and other marine foods.
The Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab is not only a practical addition but is also very attractive with its bright red coloration and striking yellow face. Like other hermit crabs, an ample supply of empty shells should be available for the Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab to move into as they molt and grow. As with all invertebrates, they do not tolerate copper-based medications and extreme fluctuations in water parameters. Also, take special care to ensure an invertebrate-friendly environment free of predators. The Scarlet Reef Hermit Crab only grows to an adult size of 1-1/2" in length.
